Frequently asked questions about Laptop Connection at Quarks

What is it?
Very simply, it’s a way of connecting your own laptop to our network so you can access the internet on your machine. This service is available pretty much anywhere these days and in some places you don’t even have to pay to connect. However, we do charge for laptop connection at Quarks.
Why do you charge?
Simply because we provide better facilities and services than, well, anywhere else really. But then, we’re a specialist internet café, so you’d expect that, right? We have a limited number of laptop points, but each of these is equipped with power to plug your machine in, space to work, an ergonomic adjustable chair and a desk lamp. In other words, it’s more of a ‘hot desk’ than a ‘sit with it on your lap’ job. This is often more suited for long stayers, people who are working out of the office, or people who work from home and fancy a change of scene.

What do you charge?
It’s a question of time. If you’re looking at a quick visit, you might be better off paying the normal rate of £3 an hour (you can even use the discount schemes against it like you would one of our normal PCs). This works out best for visit lengths up to an hour and half. For longer visits, we charge as follows:

One day pass*                         £5.00
One week pass                       £15.00
Two week pass                       £25.00
One month pass                      £40.00
Three month pass                  £100.00
Six month pass                     £150.00
Twelve months pass               £250.00

*valid on day of purchase - NOT a 24 hour pass

How does it work?
We actually only used a wired connection to the internet, that is, a network cable (we supply this) that physically plugs into the network port of your laptop. This surprises some people given the proliferation of wireless services, but we’ve found over the years that the wired connection is generally better because it’s a) very simple to connect b) has a much higher speed and c) is more secure. We stopped running wireless services completely some years ago now.

Can I order food and drink?
Yes, you can. We’ll bring it to you so you can keep working if you need to, and we’ll run a tab for the time you’re in if you prefer.

Can I print from my laptop to your printer?
No, it is not currently possible to do this.
